Our Approach

A little about us...

Real Change Fitness is owned by James and Sophia Kitchen.  They’ve been married for over 20 years and have two wonderful sons, one of whom served six years in the Air Force.  James and Sophia have 35 years of military service, with James serving 10 years in the US Army and Sophia retiring after 25 years in the US Army.  They both have previous deployments to Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Because of their love for people and fitness, in 2012 they took a leap of faith believing in their hearts that their vision to help people achieve their fitness goals and live healthier lives was a definite calling. Since then, they have witnessed change in many lives and we are determined to help many more. What started as a hobby in their three car garage with three rowers, 3 pull-up bars, 2 squat racks, a few barbells and a handful of plates has grown into a 5000+ square foot facility located at 5714 Edmondson Pike, Ste 2B, Nashville,TN.

More than a gym, Real Change Fitness is an extended family—a home away from home for everyone who enters our doors. We have folks from all walks of life, ranging from ages 9 to 75.  Whether you are a local or from out of town, everyone will know your name because the community aspect of CrossFit is our greatest strength.

Meet the Team

A good coach will make sure that each and every athlete that they work with is performing movements with the proper movement standards. Seasoned athletes or athletes that have been working out a few days can all benefit from going back to the basics. Ironing out form will not only make you safer as an athlete but also help you with your own PR goals.

Been doing crossfit for almost 2 years , played many high school sports such as baseball, football and ran track and field also did chess haha.
I truly enjoy coaching and the opportunities it presents , from the glorious moments of a pr to the shallow scenes of failure. Helping and developing athletes has always been a passion of mine so I'll always do my best to help YOU achieve all the goals.

Before finding Crossfit, I was very active as a dancer. I trained in ballet from age 3 until I graduated high school and was on the dance team in college at Florida State University where we incorporated light weight training into our conditioning routine. Graduating from FSU and leaving the dance team to my successors meant finding a new way to exercise my passion to perform and compete – and CF has been the perfect platform. In addition to the familial comradery that is unique to each box, CF has helped me become a better athlete and live a healthier lifestyle.

Not only has it been satisfying to see personal physical and mental growth, but it is truly inspiring to witness the successes of my peers. I obtained my CF-L1 certification in October 2014 and have been coaching at RCCF since May 2016. One of my greatest senses of accomplishment comes from helping an athlete hit a PR or perform a skill they didn’t think they could. Their joy is my own, and that is why I coach.

In addition to coaching, I stay active in the CF community by participating in local competitions. It is important to me to connect with athletes from other gyms and contribute to the supportive environment that makes CF so distinctive

CrossFit was the perfect blend of everything else she was looking for and it instantly became a passion of hers. Debra has a love for knowledge and is always eager to learn more about the Sport of Fitness by constantly attending a variety of clinics from mobility to Olympic weightlifting to nutrition. Watching and assisting in an athlete’s journey of their health and fitness is what made the ‘box’ a home to Debra. She believes going to the gym is never an obligation; but a blessing that you can do something that so many others cannot or choose not to.

While she has earned the nickname ‘No Rep Opal’, her focus is always on helping athletes at any level accomplish their goals.  The excitement an athlete expresses doing their first pull-up, squatting a weight they never thought they could, completing a workout RX – these are Opal’s favorite parts of coaching.

CrossFit Gymnastics coach, Jeff Tucker, taught her ‘First form, then strength, then speed.’ It has been her motto in CrossFit ever since.

Loren Bevier

Nutrition Coach

  • Certified Nutrition Coach

I’ve always loved staying active and being involved in activities and sports, from softball and basketball in high school, to kickball and running trails. It wasn’t until college that I really became interested in Nutrition and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Cooking has always been a passion of mine but conjoining all my interests didn’t occur to me until after college. While working as a dental hygienist, I did a lot of self-learning about nutrition, health and how food and diet affects athletic performance. I had joined Real Change Crossfit in October of 2014 and found an instant home in the welcoming community there. I knew when I decided to pursue Nutrition coaching they would be on board. I then decided to get a certification from Precision Nutrition so that I could extend my knowledge, help people obtain a better understanding of nutrition and live a healthier, happier life.
